New Google services and applications for BlackBerry devices: Google Maps 4.0, search through voice commands, access to star portals, Maps’ Labs and many more….
By Rupal | April 9th, 2010 | No Comments »
The time has finally come for all the BlackBerry users to revel, enjoy and celebrate. Google has recently presented an amazing lot of services and applications for the users of BlackBerry, which include some of the most ingenious, exciting and longed for applications in our times. Earlier the users of Android and the iPhones only, reaped the benefits of these services, but now there is going to be a change in the scenario. BlackBerry will be able to list itself in the small, coveted list of the Google services.
To cut down on all the guesses, the latest services offered by Google include Google Maps 4.0, Maps search through voice commands, complete entry to all the starred locations in your BlackBerry, the new socializing interface Google Buzz and the still in experimentation Maps’ Labs of which some of the Labs are free for access. Besides, these applications which gain the centre stage at the time of unveiling, there is an entire bunch of additional features and applications, up in their sleeves.
It is on first instance that Google has introduced and updated Mobile Maps for BlackBerry devices, partly owing to the sheer mass followers of BlackBerry all around the globe and due to the leading brand name of the company. The most up-to-date version, Google Maps 4.0 for BlackBerry consumers is loaded with thrilling new features. One of which includes the enabled voice command functions while using the Maps. A person while using the Maps, have to press and hold the green call key on their device and voice the name of the place, location or address of the search. Google instantly recognizes it and delivers the search results.
Google Maps 4.0 also vouchsafes for a pleasant and friendly networking community for the BlackBerry users, the Google Buzz. Where you can get in touch with all your friends, gossip, chat, comment and report, and get to know all the buzz of the tinsel towns all over the world. Another feature worth highlighting is the unrestricted use and access to all the starred locations in your device. Google Maps efficiently saves all your marked locations and allow you to gain entrance into those starred locations, once you visit your Google account.
To top it all, the brand new portal of services from Google also feature entrée into the Maps’ Labs workings. It is still early to comment on it, as some of the functions are still on trial. However, several of the Labs like terrain layers, findings of close by businesses and such others are available for the BlackBerry clients.

It has taken a while, but from what I heard from someone inside at Skylab Mobilesystems, TopoExplorer will get Canada map packs very soon! TopoExplorer allows offline mapping on BlackBerry mobile devices without the need of any internet connection. You can (purchase and) download a map pack and install it on the microSD media card of your BlackBerry. TopoExplorer does not even try to connect to the internet when you are using it. It leverages the internal GPS receiver (or if not available, an external Bluetooth GPS) to get location fixes and then points your location on the map. As the map is loaded from the media card, there is no need for an internet connection. This makes it firstly cost efficient and also independent from network coverage.
As of now there are TopoExplorer Map Packs which cover each state in the US of A separately as well as overview map packs for the Alps, Africa, Europe and South America.
I am not sure if the Canada map packs will be divided by province as well (like they are for the USA). Anyway, everyone can check out TopoExplorer as the application as well as some maps are free. Though the free maps do not have a high scale, it is enough to see how the program works.

DisasterAlert brings Disasters directly into your BlackBerry and Maps them using GPS
By k | November 2nd, 2009 | No Comments »
Did you ever ask yourself whether or not you will be informed early enough when an earthquake took place in the pacific? Just imagine you are living in LA or San Francisco and that earthquake is causing a Tsunami… I would want to know that – right now! Finally, there is a solution for this called DisasterAlert for BlackBerry!
DisasterAlert is a brand new application which has just been published by Skylab Mobilesystems. They are well known for mobile GPS and mapping applications (see BlackBerry and GPS for more).
DisasterAlert is available as a subscription based BlackBerry app which somehow shows a global disaster report of disasters that take place right now. It lists these disasters by date and time their information was last updated. By utilizing the BlackBerry’s internal GPS receiver (or an external Bluetooth GPS dongle if your device does not have a built-in GPS) DisasterAlert also shows the distance to each disaster! This allows us to quickly figure whether or not we might be affected by it.
Disaster Types Supported: Floods, Earthquakes, Tropical Cyclones and more.
Like you can see in the screen shot below, DisasterAlert can also show these disasters on a map which give a visual feedback on the location. An image is so much better than just plain numbers, right

When you are in the map view DisasterAlert actually uses BlackBerry Maps. However, if you open the menu and click on “Details”, while the disaster is in focus, you will see further details about it. For example, it will tell you the type of disaster, name, category, country and even the count of people that might be affected by it. I got to get this! DisasterAlert is definitely in the app category: “It is better to have it and not need it, than to need and not have it!”
Compatibility: DisasterAlert is compatible with all current BlackBerry devices no matter with or w/o GPS. This includes the brand new Storm2 and Storm, Bold, Curve, Tour and so on.
The application and service is available for $29.99 per 6 months (which makes just $4.99 per month) and it comes with free lifetime updates. The 12-month plan lets you even save 17% compared to the 6-month plan. So it might be worth looking into that out too.

With TopoExplorer you will discover your surroundings on topographic maps even in remote areas assisted by GPS and without the need of the wireless network connection.
- Offline Maps – No wireless network connection needed.
- Shows GPS position in different coordinate systems.
- Large map support from memory card.

TopoExplorer works worldwide!
That’s what they say
Anyway, I was a beta tester and liked the app pretty much. Though there weren’t enough maps available for my area, it worked fine. Back in November 2008 we already wrote about this app. Anyway, the new version seems to work better so check it out yourself – it’s free anyway so there is no catch.

Topographic Maps & GPS on your BlackBerry – Without Internet Connection
By k | December 9th, 2008 | No Comments »If you are living in Oslo, Hamburg, Chicago, Brooklyn, London Area, or Hong Kong you can use the free beta version of TopoExplorer for BlackBerry.
It seems to be a very early beta version which actually just plots your GPS location onto a map. The maps that are delivered for free with the beta version are topographic maps. Some of them are even older Russian (must be secret soviet government stuff) ones. The following maps (with their scales) are included:
- Oslo Region (1:200.000 Map)
- Hamburg Region (1:500.000 Map)
- Chicago (1:24.000)
- Brooklyn (1:24.000)
- London Area (1:500.000)
- Hong Kong (1:200.000)
So this application just makes sense for people living at those areas – at least at the moment. It is said that the final version will support
- 1:24.000 Maps for the whole US
- 1:50.000 – 1:1000.000 Maps for the whole World
Here is a screen shot:

I have tested the application on a camping trip to some outskirt areas and it worked fine. Though it is a beta version I did not find any bug. Well, some more features would be nice but it is still a beta version ![]()
