Research In Motion(RIM) has announced that Digital China, a Hong Kong based company will distribute their BlackBerry handsets in China. This deal will help in increasing the sales of BlackBerry phones in Mainland China. It was also announced that RIM will work in tandem with Chinese Telecom giants, China Mobile to provide services to the middle and small user. These two deals will ensure that the sale of BlackBerry ’smartphones’ will increase in the country. This decision comes amidst a time when the smartphone market is expanding in China and a spurt of iPhone sale had been seen.

The China Mobile and RIM cooperation deal was announced on Tuesday and includes plans to support China’s indigenous TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE technologies for BlackBerry phones in China. TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) is a technology on the lines of 3G and has been largely developed in China and is the mode used by China Mobile. The two have been working together for some time and now RIM will develop a new version of its BlackBerry handset that supports China’s homegrown 3G standard.

China Mobile is the world’s biggest phone carrier with terms to subscriber and has provided BlackBerry services in China since 2006. But with a reach limited to bigger corporates, the new deal will help in reaching to other segments of the small scale businesses. The Chinese handset market is estimated to be 650 Million and tapping in to the mid-wrung as well as smaller user will be a huge step for RIM and China Mobile. The latter will start this new service from next year and offer Chinese BlackBerry users access to multiple POP3/IMAP e-mail accounts.

Inking a double boost for BlackBerry, the Digital China collaboration will help in selling BlackBerry handsets in Mainland China. Digital China has a huge national network and selling the handsets through them will help in increasing the BlackBerry market share.

Vlingo Corporation has released new data on teen driver distractions and texting features on top of it. The second annual Vlingo Consumer Mobile Messaging Habits Report was released at the start of National Teen Driver Safety Week to be observed from October 18- 24. The primary finding according to the report was that 60% of the teens surveyed admitted to reading incoming text messages while driving.

Some findings:

94 percent of teens use their mobile phones to send text messages.
54 percent send more than 500 text messages per month.
79 percent send more text messages than make phone calls.
72 percent teens use text messaging only to communicate with friends.
60% of the teens surveyed admitted to reading incoming text messages while driving.
Only 40% teens are aware of the ban on texting while driving in their state.
Only 9 states have a driving while texting for teenagers ban in the USA.( Sept 2009)

But the encouraging factor in that 62 percent of teens supported making driving while texting (DWT) illegal. But when given the option of the handsfree, only 32 percent favored making it illegal. Another 90 percent said that if there was a technology/software that helped them read their incoming messages aloud and type messages as they spoke while driving, then they would opt for the same.

On this, Dave Grannan, CEO of Vlingo, added that it was a good sign that the teens were willing to use newer technologies to make driving safer. The report had also done a survey of the number of states that had a DWT/mobile phone while driving ban. The findings were that two of the top five worst states including TN, NJ, AL, ID, OK had such a law in place. And the best five states which include AZ, VT, RI, OH, MI, only Rhode Island has a law on DWT for those under 18.

The survey was conducted amongst 4816 online members above the age of 13.
