NextAction! – the only BlackBerry task application that was made for David Allen’s GTD only – will soon be updated by their vendor. From what we hear from our sources inside of their development team we will see a new version which will come mainly with bug fixes and productivity improvements which will make it easier for us to use. Though I have to say that NextAction! is already very streamlined and extremely easy to use.
Many people often compare NextAction! with TodoMatrix by RexWireless – also because of the similar price structure. While I really like TodoMatrix due to its full blown task management system, I have to say it is not really suitable for GTD. It can do everything and has thousands of features – which is not always the best way to go. And it also needs their RexConnect to be able to synchronize tasks.
NextAction! on the other hand builds completely on the BlackBerry’s internal task database which allows me to use my normal desktop or BES / wireless synchronization which is already built into the BlackBerry. This is a very reliable and proven way to sychronize tasks with virtually anything the BlackBerry is compatible with. On top of this, I really love the feature-less approach of Keep-It-Simple-Stupid with NextAction!. Though there are some special GTD features like Project Management and Someday / Maybe Lists which extended NextAction!’s functionality tremendously in the last version 3.1 update.
Check out that official NextAction! video which shows some of the highlights in NextAction!:
Anyway, I am keen to get my hands on the new version of NextAction! Great thing that their apps come with free lifetime updates if you purchase a license at MobileSoftMarket

The new GTD support I mentioned some days ago just hit the markets. The sneak a peak preview I tested before was pretty much like the version which has been released today. However, there were slight changes in the HTML layout as well as in the performance improvement that took place. Quite a sweet peace. Check out the details below.
S4BB Limited has just released a new beta version of TaskReports. New features and changes in version 1.4.0 are:
- GTD® reports (next actions, contexts, projects, and project progress).
- Help screen for general usage.
- HTML reports have been polished.
- Improved start up time and program feedback.
- Improved performance on report generation (saves battery power).
- Bug fixes: no more out of memory errors when you have thousands of tasks in your db.
Key Features of TaskReports
- Analyzing of your whole task database.
- Simplified reports give you a detailed overview.
- Compatible with desktop task applications including but not limited to Microsoft® Outlook®, iCal®, Entourage®, and more if you are synchronizing your task database. All tasks which can be synchronized with the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, MissingSync or PocketMac are supported.
- Compatible with other task applications like BlackBerry® Tasks™, NextAction!, TaskMaster™, TaskMailer™, QuickTask™.
- On-Demand report sending.
- Currently supported report types:
- Basic textual report.
- Basic graphical report.
- Upcoming tasks report (today, this week, this month).
- GTD® reports (next actions, contexts, projects, and project progress).
- Background email schedules (one time, daily or weekly basis).
- Colorful EMail (HTML) reports.
TaskReports™ is now compatible with all current BlackBerry® models.
All current beta testers have already received an update email. If you want to join our free and open beta test please register.

NextAction!, the leading GTD Software for BlackBerry devices does not sync 100% with the Necentrics Outlook Plugin for GTD. The makers of NextAction! – S4BB Limited – are working on a solution for that but haven’t released anything yet. It seems the hardcore GTD enthusiasts can not wait and are brewing something on their own:
Tim McIntyre posted a Visual Basic Script on the David Allen Forum apparently solving it. Check it out here.
