Earlier today, a leaked version of the Android App Player was found in a Desktop Manager update changelog. Many people have downloaded it, including myself, and it doesn’t seem to be functioning properly and slowing down my PlayBook.

My conclusion, after downloading it on my PlayBook, is that it’s pretty much useless for most users now. They pretty much loaded the whole Android OS onto the PlayBook as an application, but we can’t use the functions yet. And it’s super slow, it took over a minute to load the Player and it’s draining my battery like…

RIM’s response to this leak was:

So just now, I published an article about Facebook for BlackBerry Beta 4 Released with Cross Messaging Features on Beta Zone. But if you aren’t a Beta Zone member, how can you test out the app? This how to article will teach you how.

Step 1 – Register for a BlackBerry Beta Zone account

Open a web browser and head over to http://www.blackberry.com/beta. After reviewing the information presented, click on the “Register Now” link that appears underneath the “Want to Join” banner, which will display the registration form.

You must be a resident of a country listed on the registration form in order to join BlackBerry Beta Zone. New countries are added daily as the site continues to expand. If your country is not listed, you will not be able to register for BlackBerry Beta Zone. For a listing of BlackBerry Beta Zone supported countries, click here.

An important step while signing up is to ensure that you specify your current BlackBerry smartphone PIN number in the registration form. This information is required, as keycodes will be created to unlock applications you install from BlackBerry Beta Zone and they are based on the PIN that’s contained in your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.

To get your PIN number, select “Options” from your BlackBerry smartphone’s home screen, followed by selecting “Status”. If you upgrade your BlackBerry smartphone in the future, make sure you update your PIN in your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile.

Other than the BlackBerry Social Platform SDK 1.0 for Java, RIM also released a SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks in Beta Zone as well. This beta release is designed to give developers the ability to accomplish the following:

  • access and update fields in the user’s profile such as status, avatar and personal message
  • create their own custom areas within the user’s profile for promoting recent application activity or storing trophies and achievements
  • initiate BBM chats with friends
  • initiate file transfers
  • the ability to share applications virally with friends in their contact list
  • initiate application-to-application background communication through BBM for sending and receiving application instructions, such as moves in a game or any other application state changes

For BlackBerry WebWorks app developers, initiating application-to-application background communication through BBM is particularly relevant. The major difference between the Java® and BlackBerry WebWorks versions of the BBM Social Platform is that Java developers are able to leverage the pre-existing BBM chat fields, adding those Java UI components directly in their applications to support in-app chat. For a BlackBerry WebWorks developer, if you’re enabling BBM chat within the context of your application, you’ll want to leverage the app-to-app background communication functionality for the sending and receiving of messages between two BBM users, then render that chat using the HTML and CSS you define.
