TopoExplorer in New Version, with New Price and more New Map Packs
More new topographic map packs for the states below are now available for the free TopoExplorer for BlackBerry application. Moreover, they lowered the price for each map pack from $49 to $29. Remember, we mentioned a pricing poll last time new map packs were published. So it seems the guys over at Skylab are actually listening to their customers and price their products based on what the users are saying.
Newly published States:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Montana
- Nebraska
- Oklahoma
- Virginia

I downloaded the “free” program and the two free maps. Whenever I opened the program, it would take me off the coast of Africa to coordinates 0,0. I contacted support about this problem and was assured that it would work on my Verizon Storm. Support was very quick in responding……….. until I purchased the maps of New York State. The program still takes me to 0,0. I wrote support. No response. I wrote support again. No response. I am still waiting for a response from support but do not anticipate hearing back from them anymore. They received their money and I received 4 GB of useless files.
I am using TopoExplorer version 1.0.77 and noticed version 1.0.72.0 at the BlackBerry app store. I tried the other version with the same results. The phone has the latest operating system authorized by Verizon as of 6-3-09 (v4.7.0.148 platform 4.0.0.181). Google Maps, BlackBerry Maps, and Nav4all work great using the GPS. I checked the coordinates from Nav4all against my handheld GPS and found them to be the same. I wanted to make sure the coordinates were not coming from cell towers. So, the GPS works fine in three programs, but not in TopoExplorer. Sounds like a glitch on their end, not on mine. I can open a map manually (from the Maps folder), but as soon as I press down on the screen, it goes to 0,0. Hello, I do not boat in the area. I cannot load the optimum map since my maps are not from the Atlantic Ocean.
If this problem is fixed and the program works as advertised, I will gladly let everyone know and upgrade my rating. It is advertised as being compatible with the Storm, but I don’t think so. Verizon does not lock the GPS on the Storm like they did with other phones. If anyone has this program working on their Storm, please e-mail me at smallengrep@yahoo.com and let me know how you did it.

Did you ever go to a local hiking/outdoor store and bought a topographic map just for the county? It is $60-$90 there already. Considering that price and then considering the $29 for a TopoExplorer map pack which has the whole state … the TopoExplorer Map Pack is a lot cheaper.
Did you try just to click on a map in the map manager to see whether the maps are actually working?

You must be kidding. You sound like the developer or an employee.
If it was that simple, why have the developers ignored all attempts to figure out why it will not work? I have e-mailed them numerous times and they have NEVER responded. They responded to all questions BEFORE buying the Maps, but have never since. The Crackberry forums are full of posts with the same problem.
Now I do agree with you on the price……… IF THE DAMN THING WORKS. Did you buy the maps of your state? Does it find your location or go to 0,0 coordinates? I can pan all I want but what good is it if it will not tell me where I am on the map? Read my post. I left my e-mail if you have any tips to make it work. If I can get it to work, I will post a better review.

I did get a refund of my money. I went to my PayPal account and found out that Digital River is another company of Element Five and they do their billing. Call them at 1-800-406-4966 for a refund. They were very helpful.

I’ve updated to the latest version of Topo Explorer, also.
The thing goes to coordinates 0,0 and never changes. It doesn’t find my coordinates even when I open the topo map of my home.
Haven’t had very good feedback from support, I don’t really think there is any support, no evidence that there is.
Anyone else had this problem and able to fix it? I see I’m not the only one with this problem.
