BlackBerry devices are always in development and new models are released quite often. Therefore, the available resolution of the BlackBerry and its different models is changing from time to time. Generally, this resolution is increasing and getting more and more sharp. We check the current devices and prepared a quite complete overview of the currently available BlackBerry models and their resolutions for you.

This is especially interesting as the new BlackBerry has been released which comes with a new resolution again.

Display Resolutions:

The BlackBerry Display Resolutions Overview
There are different resolutions on the BlackBerry’s display. The first devices with very low resolutions even had monochrome displays.

The very first BlackBerry devices had 160×100 pixel (e.g. BlackBerry 6210) or 160×160 pixel (BlackBerry 5790). All those devices came with a monochrome display. Models with higher resolutions also brought colors to our world. Starting with 240×160 pixel (72xx, 75xx series) we went over to 240×240 (77xx series), 240×260 (71xx, 81xx series), 320×240 (87xx, 83xx, 88xx series).

The new BlackBerry Bold will have twice as much space as the most current devices at the moment. This seems to be enought space for the user’s requirements right now.

Model Resolution Pixel
“Quark” (62xx) 160 x 100 16000
5790, 58xx, 67xx 160 x 160 19600
7200, 7500 240 x 160 38400
7700 240 x 240 57500
“Charm” (7100), 7130x, “Perl” (81xx) 240 x 260 62400
“Electron” (8700), “Gamma Ray” (88xx), “Curve” (83xx) 320 x 240 76800
“Bold” (9000) 480 x 320 153600

The display resolution’s future

What benefit do we have from those resolutions? What can we do with that? The direction is clear: new resoltuions allow business users to view stock quotes (see free Stock app) in reasonable sizes. Also SAP applications are going to be used on BlackBerry devices.

Also the BlackBerry needs to keep pace with other new mobile devices like the iPhone. We will see what the future is bringing, but there will definitely some nice applications that will use the new space. GPS Navigation and mapping will be one interesting field here as well as graphic and image based applications.

I have an 8830. The display resolution is 320×240(4:3) and it measures 2″ wide by 1.5″ tall. Recorded TV shows fit perfectly, as SD TV aspect ratio 4:3.

The new Bold increases resolution to 480×320(3:2), but the width of the phone & display is the same, 2″. Correct?

That means the display height is only 1.33″. That’s a smaller display! SD TV (4:3) on the Bold will only be 1.78″x1.33″ (letter bars left and right). That’s 56% smaller viewing area than my 8830.
