BlackBerry 8800 GPSVenturebeat reported about the setup of a $150 million fund to boost BlackBerry application development. Unfortunately, the post has been taken down and we do not know why.

It is obvious that RIM has to respond on the iFund plans for iPhone applications. Following the example of many similar programs RIM’s appearance in the market as well as the functionality of the BlackBerry will increase dramatically. Just take a look to Facebook with its “Facebook Apps”. They became very attractive to their users and put the platform to another level. Moreover, Google is also doing something similar, but a more “community thing”: The Android Developer Challenge is a price competition where 50 round one winners get $25,000 each and even go on to the next level. The money is to give developers the freedom for their development of cutting edge mobile applications.

It will be interesting what kind of applications developers will bring if they are somehow more motivated. We see a lot of change in the software market for BlackBerry devices as there are coming more and more applications for BlackBerry right now. However, compared to platforms like Windows Mobile or Symbian those amount of applications is still not that much.
