BlackBerry Pearl
I got an email from our reader Caleb who asked the following question:

I have a problem. I bought a new 8100 in Hong Kong, unlocked. However, when I try to use it in Switzerland, where I live. I cannot use the mms function or email. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem. I called my Switzerland service provider, Orange, and they say my phone is registered with another service provider and I need to contact that service provider to help me. But I don’t know who it is as I bought it in a mobile phone shop. Can anyone help me?

The problem is, that EMail and MMS are so called “data services”. Though the user does not really see an MMS as a traditional data service, it is one believe me ;)

The BlackBerry’s normal data service is quite expensive in several countries. My counterpart at the localized German version of BlackBerryInsight for example has a T-Mobile contract which is - compared to the rest of the world - kind of cheap as it comes with a 5 GB fair flatrate. Anyway, to use the BlackBerry’s internal data services like push EMail and MMS you need to have a BlackBerry service contract with your mobile service provider like Orange. There is no other way to get that working.

If you are just looking for connecting your BlackBerry to the Internet, which means you want to surf the web, you can take a look to our Howto: Get BlackBerry Internet Access without Data Plan (example: China Mobile). This should technically work with every network carrier you got a GPRS card from.
