There’s confirmed roaming coverage ( http://www.blackberryforums.com/blackberry-network/6141-bb-china.html ), but how long have you been able to sell BlackBerrys in China? Source?

[...] Short introduction: For 10 years Hong Kong belongs to China again. Therefor, there are a lot of advantages in that area. It is a so called “special administrative region” of the People’s Republic of China with a population of about 7 mio. people. The market is completely encapsulated and nearly the most (financially) liberal place on earth. Hong Kong’s economic power is mostly built on import/export and financial businesses. [...]

You can get 50M download via GPRS for 20RMB/month here via China Mobile.

It’s easy to enable, just ask for ‘bao yue WAP fuwu’ (pay-per-month WAP services) and they’ll show you the list of options. There are also lower options (5RMB/month, etc.).

I never used a blackberry or even saw one but from what I hear its just a regular email client via GPRS… why this stuff is news i dunno

I have a Vodafone BlackBerry Curve 8310 working in China with no problems, here are the secrets:

    - China Mobile offers BlackBerry service at 398 RMB per month for 50 MB of data, payable upfront for 12 months (4 776 RMB or around US$800).
    - Officially, you require to have a company in China order the service for you, though it’s easy to get past this (anything in China is up for negotiation).
    - The secret number is 400 811 1086 to order the service, you need a normal China Mobile SIM card first before ordering (anyone with GPRS will do). After that, if you don’t speak fluent Mandarin, you will have to wait for an English speaking person to phone you back.
    - China Mobile only supports BES, they might tell you that BES and mail server must be located in China, but don’t believe that, the first time I phoned them they said so, the second time (the same guy) told me foreign BES is fine. They also apparently only support Microsoft Exchange (not Lotus or anything like that), this is also a lie.
    - BlackBerry coverage is available in China everywhere where there is GSM 900 coverage, not only in the 6 major cities. There is even coverage in Tibet, just don’t expect coverage in the area between Tibet and the rest of China, for that the Motorola 95xx Portable Satellite Phone is quite handy (it doesn’t offer push mail unfortunately).
    - The Hong Kong data plans work out much more expensive due to the roaming charges and they also require a contract. For short term use I’d recommend using your home country’s carrier and pay the roaming charges.

    HI Lionel,

I have a blackberry in HK and I would like my GM in Dongguan to get one as well.
He keeps telling that it is not possible to get a package with XX MB in China, instead China telecom will charge for XX hours of internet.

did you buy your BB handset in China? your provider in CHina is China telecom?
I have a HTC handset and would like to pass him…do u know if he can just get the SIM card and the package in China w/o buying the handset?

    thks

I have baught a blackberry in beijing and my friend got on in tianjin. but to infrom you, that China doesnt have blackberry yet, they are all second hand. maybe the seller will tell you that they are new but keep in mind there are no new blackberries in china. the pack and the manual and everything is made here for it, but the phone comes from honkong or europe, they are second hand, sometimes they change the body cover and say its a brand new, but they are second hand, i wish blackberry coem to china soon.

I hope that someone can help me. I’m an American living in Guangzhou, China. I currently have an iPhone 3GS but the horrible battery life is making me regret getting the phone in the first place. I’ve only had it for exactly 4 months and while it’s features are many, the battery life negates almost any of the features that made me buy it in the first place.

I was in an electronics mall the other day, here in China, and I was looking at Blackberry. I played with the BB 9000 and liked what I saw – the biggest factor being the user replaceable battery. After being in the store for what amounted to be an hour, (my Chinese girlfriend having to interpret everything for me) I was all set to purchase the handset, but then was told that I needed to purchase a separate service that amounted to 58 rmb per month in order to get my Yahoo mail to work on the device. I simply want the device for email. I can use my iPhone for all the other silly stuff that I want to do if I need to. I ONLY need access to my Yahoo email, both send and receive – that’s it.
The email setup for my iPhone was easy as pie. I had choices for external mail options and I only had to insert my China Mobile SIM card into the device. I don’t pay any other charge except for the usage of the card. I just configured my pop3 information into the iPhone and I was off and running. I love the iPhone, but the battery drain is ridiculous. And I purchased an external battery adapter that makes the entire package too large to use.
I’d really appreciate any help you could provide.
