EmergencyWipe for BlackBerry Wireless Handheld
Some days ago we presented you the press release of this new offline security program called EmergencyWipe. Today I was able to check that out (I got a free evaluation unit :)) and I really love it.

There will not be so much circumstances when you might use this application. It wipes a bunch of confidential data of your BlackBerry on your command. Well, we all know that if you are on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server your BlackBerry can be wiped remotely if you lost it. But if you have a BlackBerry that is not on a BES (like I have one) or the guy who will take your BlackBerry knows how to prevent the BlackBerry from not logging into the BES you will have a problem. There is no way to delete your BlackBerry’s confidential data. That’s exactly what the EmergencyWipe can do.

Anecdote: I had en experience some time ago where I accidently went into an restricted military area. Actually I was just hiking with some friends to a GPS position we picked by random on Google Earth. Well, the military thought that was not such a good idea and after negotiation and searching us they decided to confiscate our digital cameras and a BlackBerry. Having all those important tasks, contacts and appointments in there they can check… So in this situation I would have definitely used this kind of application to wipe the device before they confiscated it.

But back to the review. The program is directly built for this kind of situation. If you are in the need to fastly wipe your confidential data you can do so. Even though it has a “double wipe confirmation” so you cannot wipe your BlackBerry accidentially. The current version wipes the tasks, contacts and appointments of your BlackBerry. It is always recommended to have a backup of your BlackBerry stored on your computer, so you can restore that backup easy if you get your BlackBerry back. Or, if you are synchronizing your BlackBerry with your favorite desktop application you can just sync the data from your desktop to your BlackBerry. The quite good EmergencyWipe Guide has covered all those topics as well.

If you have several hundred items (contacts, tasks, appointments) in there this might take some time. Anyway, the BlackBerry will be “clean” after the wipe and therefor you can give it away without being afraid of compromising anyones contact or your own tasks and appointments. Therefor, I can recommend that one for everyone who might come in circumstances it is necessary to wipe the confidential data no-one should get access to. Its easy and slim interface allows you to clean the BlackBerry in a fast way but also provides high protection to not delete your data by accident.

You can get a license of EmergencyWipe for BlackBerry here.
