Worked like a charm on my 8820. Popped the ring off from the top with a fingernail. Took assembly apart and cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, but had to use tweezers to put metal clip back on. Plastic ring will snap back in easily if you have it aligned the right way, so don't force it. It's like I got a new phone, thanks.

PS AT&T store denied that any such fix existed, surprise.

I Broke mine, and I ordered a new one at www.blackberrytrackballs.com. It came the next day and I fixed it myself in a minute. It was so much cheaper than bringing it to someone else!

BIG thanks. Woke up this morning to my track ball not scrolling right. I was highly upset. This had happened before and seemed to work itself out after a couple of very frustrating moments!! I got to work this morning and type in my problem. And your post came up. I did as you explain and it still wouldnt scroll right but I put it in a different way. Then I decided to clean it for the second time and check on the sensors. After everything is said and done my bb now works like its suppose to. I was prepared to go spend money to replace the track wheel...had already been to ebay. Thanks again!!

Thank you very much, i used a really small precision flathead screwdriver, slowly pried it out just above the TY button and pop came off the silver ring, turned out the mini rollers on the corners are magnetic and small bits of metal were stuck to it, just picked it off carefully until it was all gone and put it all back together, presto, i love my blackberry again!

Thanks to the article this helped me solve my problem. I was about to buy a new phone. I did remove the pieces above (shown in the photo) and when I put it back together my track ball still did not move up or down. I actually went in and took everything apart be advised it takes patience to put it back together and I did. I removed however the second metallic ring and it works perfectly fine.
Thanks =)
