I just figured out how to use the MobileTracker GPS tracking application on a BlackBerry Pearl or BlackBerry Curve!
Lets remember to what that program actually is: The MobileTracker allows us to track the way we are walking / driving / hiking / running / … and we can easily click onto the resulting file which automatically opens in Google Earth.
Back to the topic. As we all know, the BlackBerry Pearl (as well as the Curve) does not have a built-in GPS receiver like the BlackBerry 8800. As the BlackBerry Pearl is very similar to the Curve and vice versa there should be no difference in the compatibility. However, if you already have or going to purchase an external Bluetooth GPS receiver the Pearl / Curve is compatible as well. So now, all you also need would be the MobileTracker of Skylab Mobilesystems Ltd. and install it on your BlackBerry.
Setting up the Pearl, your Bluetooth GPS receiver and MobileTracker is really easy going:
- Pair the Bluetooth GPS with your Pearl
- Start MobileTracker
- Enter a name
- Start tracking
The Pearl’s LED should start blinking in blue as a feedback for the Bluetooth connection.

Once you press the “Stop Tracking” button tracking will be stopped and the file will be written to your SD-Card. You can access the file easily by connecting your Pearl to your desktop computer (I prefer an USB cradle) and click on the mass storage drive that has been created. In the subdirectory “blackberry” you will find the name entered for the tracklog with the KML extension attached to it. That’s it. By double clicking onto that file Google Earth will start (if it is not running already) and zooms into your tracklog.
