Current BlackBerry GPS Gadgets

May 24th, 2007

Nearly all current BlackBerry models* can take advantage of GPS capabilites. Most of them still need an external Bluetooth GPS receiver. Others (like the 7100i, 7520, 8703e and 8800) have a built in one. Of course, having a built-in GPS receiver is much more convenienct than dealing with an additional device. But RIM tried to make it as easy as possible and since the release of the BlackBerry Pearl it is really really easy going. One more interesting thing: The product descriptions of the older BlackBerry 7100, 7200 and 8700 series just list “Bluetooth Headset Capabilities”. To be honest: That is just not true. Every Bluetooth-enabled BlackBerry can also be paired with a Bluetooth GPS receiver. So if you are looking for a Bluetooth GPS receiver, we have collected some links for you:

If you are still on an old BlackBerry (e.g. the 7200 series does not have an intel processor and is quite slow for some applications) you can get of course get a new one. And if getting a new one, why not getting with already built-in GPS? Perhaps you like the smaller fancy ones, so a Pearl would be great for you:

I have read from some guys who would like to get a pink Pearl. Well … not my color, but the Cingular Pearl above would be the best fit for now ;)

So we have a BlackBerry and some sort of GPS now. Which can be a Bluetooth GPS or a built-in one. So we just need GPS software to get the best out of our package. Quite a long time ago we wrote the best artcle about BlackBerry and GPS you can find on the web. (Try google it!) Being the No. 1 GPS article for the BlackBerry scene for such a long does not mean it is outdated. We, of course, update our articles regularily to provide our readers with the most recent information we can find. There are all important 3rd party GPS applications (Berryvine Companion, CaffeineFinder, Fastfoodfinder, MapQuest Find Me, Mobile Locator, Naggie, Spot for Blackberry, Telenav and Trimble Outdoors) listed. Some of them are better, some not. To rewrite the whole article here would be too much. So I suggest to take 5 minutes and check our guide: BlackBerry and GPS

To summarize a bit: There are a lot of ways to get GPS positioning working on your BlackBerry but there are only some ways to get it working pretty well. Now I will get back to track some of my routes and may be save some waypoints ;)

P.S.: Don’t forget to check out our BlackBerryInsight Hardware Store for more gadgets.

Who needs a PDA if one can have a BlackBerry?

AndyODonovan.jpg
That’s the question Andy O’Donovan (managing director, Relay Express Couriers) just threw out.

He is right. Or to be more concrete: No one needs a PDA! Well, a PDA has these fancy touchpad which allows us to drag, drop and draw nearly everything we can imagine. But that’s not so important. The Windows Mobile PocketPC line started with a huge hype is now going down. Killed by smartphones like the BlackBerry and Motorola Q PDAs will not survive the next years. It will not be a going down for Windows Mobile as there are still the Smartphones which are really popular. Anyway, the PDA is dead!

Want to switch to a BlackBerry? You can get one here.

Spot for BlackBerry
Spot GPS and Mapping tool seems to support BlackBerry 8120
Well, some news that came along by browsing. It was not easy to find news about the 8120. BGR reported the 8120 will replace the current Pearl 8100 and come with built-in GPS. So I browsed a bit and I found a very hard to find link at the Spot site. If you open the “All Devices” drop down box you’ll see the BlackBerry 8120 listed with the other GPS-BlackBerry devices (7100i, 7520, 8703e, 8800, 8830).

There is also a site already set up which covers the compatiblity with the 8120’s built-in GPS receiver as well as SD-Card support and the other features that already available on the Pearl. I love my Pearl but if could get the same device with built-in GPS I would immediately switch to it! :)

P.S.: Sorry for the huge amount of Skylab reporting in the last time but there happened just so much I couldn’t hold back. ;)

BlackBerry’s SD-Card compromised by Windows’ ScanDisc

May 20th, 2007

As you might know, I am dealing a lot with videos (from files or YouTube), testing a lot of Software on my BlackBerry, synchronize my Pearl, doing some ringtone stuff, export GPS waypoints and so on. So my 1 GB micro SD-Card (btw: I paid more than $40 for mine - prices are dropping so fast) is used quite often. Well, as most USB mass storage devices it has been formatted using FAT32 (which honestly is not the best file system). Windows itself loves to check those “drives”. Today, after I rebooted my Windows machine I was surprised that before Windows has been started my BlackBerry Pearl must have been mounted already. Therefor, Windows thought it might be a good idea to check on the Pearl’s SD-Card if there are any defects. I got the resulting output:

Checking file system on G:
The type of the file system is FAT.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume Serial Number is FC30-3DA9
Removing nonvalid long folder entry from \blackberry…
Removing nonvalid long folder entry from \blackberry…
Removing nonvalid long folder entry from \blackberry\pictures…
Removing nonvalid long folder entry from \blackberry\pictures…
Removing nonvalid long folder entry from \blackberry\pictures…
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

998440960 bytes total disk space.
770048 bytes in 2 hidden files.
114688 bytes in 7 folders.
547930112 bytes in 147 files.
449626112 bytes available on disk.

16384 bytes in each allocation unit.
60940 total allocation units on disk.
27443 allocation units available on disk.

Well, unfortunately I didn’t want Windows to check my and even automatically(!) repair something. Why the hell does Windows “think” it can remove some directories from my card?!?

So here is my advice: Don’t trust Windows! Don’t have your BlackBerry connected to a Windows machine when you boot it!
