BerryDict - BlackBerry On-Device Dictionaries
Since some weeks I have all of them on my device.

The BerryDict product line of S4BB Ltd. brings dictionaries TO your BlackBerry. I have seen a lot of BlackBerry applications that offer translation services (e.g. Translator+). The problem with them is: You need a working network coverage to translate some word. Moreover, it takes time until the answer comes back (there is always a delay if you have a network interaction) and it also costs money or takes something from your data plan.

The BerryDict approach is different. You will have the complete dictionary on your device and do not need any interaction using the network connection. So it will also work in areas or countries where you do not have network coverage. I was using it on a trip to Vietnam 2 weeks ago and it worked fine. Having a dictionary always at hand is very convenient!

There are 5 dictionaries available for all current BlackBerry models:

  1. English to French
  2. English to German
  3. English to Italian
  4. English to Portuguese
  5. English to Spanish

The usage is quite easy. After installing the application using the “BlackBerry Desktop Manager” you just click onto the flag on your BlackBerry’s desktop and the program starts. Because the on-device dictionary must be loaded the startup process may take some seconds but that is OK. Now you just start typing the English word you are looking for and the dictionary performs a realtime search in its list. You can see an example using the Spanish BerryDict below.

After you have found the word you are looking for you can select “Translate” from the BlackBerry’s menu and the result appears in a new screen. Even though the screenshot below is not the word we were looking for in the previous one I am sure you can imagine how the translation works.

It works fine for me, so you can give it a try.

Finally, I can just say: Less than 15 bucks are a great investment in knowledge. Even Benjamin Franklin said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best return.
