Are you one of the 650,000 BlackBerry gamers?
The market of BlackBerry gamers is estimated at 650,000 according to BPlay Vice President Nicholas Reichenbach. There are approximately 8 million BlackBerry users worldwide. RIM has encouraged game development with better handset features like clearer, crisper screens and trackball controls more suited to games, and an open API for game developers.
Well, we have seen a bunch of BlackBerry out there like Sudoku or Tetris clones, and don’t forget the famous BrickBreaker!
Are you one of those 650,000 players?
To be honest, sometimes I on the BrickBreaker icon on my Pearl’s desktop. But not only players seem to boost the mobile software market for the BlackBerry platform.
Handango reports that their BlackBerry application library grew 81% in 2006, faster than the growth of any related smartphone or PDA category. What applications were they buying? The Business & Professional category was #1, but Games were #4, trailing Productivity and Entertainment but ahead of Travel and Communications & Multimedia categories. Furthermore, Games ranked 4th in Sales by Category and 3rd in Searches.
Well, that’s a nice increase in BlackBerry applications. The BlackBerry becomes more and more a multimedia device which can be pimped by fancy applications. No matter if those applications enhance your BlackBerry in the field of productivity, multimedia, traveling or education. A broad third party software catalog is important for a platform to be strong on the market. That’s why Microsoft’s Windows was so successful. There are millions of programs and you can do nearly everything with them. I am pretty sure there will come more and more BlackBerry applications for us. More applications that enhance the BlackBerry and give us more freedom in doing what we want to do with it.

Well, with Blackberry finally opening their API, we should see a bunch of talented developers create new programs. Free and shareware, just like the Windows Mobile developers.
