Just got mail back from my inquiry at HK CSL regarding a Chinese Input Method for the BlackBerry Pearl:
Please kindly note Chinese Input is not supported in BlackBerry Pearl. For the version Mr Bush [name changed by editor] has downloaded is for displaying Chinese only.
After I asked for a time frame on the release of the Chinese input for the Pearl I received the following answer:

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until those Chinese input capabilities will be added to the BlackBerry OS 4.2 by RIM. I guess the new 8800 will also come with a new version of the BlackBerry OS 4.2 and I hope it will bring some more features to our devices. The problem is that it is not depending on HK CSL or any other phone provider to add those features to the BlackBerry OS. This must be done by RIM! Moreover, I - personally - don’t care about the provider the BlackBerry OS comes from. Can be HK CSL, Smartone Vodafone, Singapore Telecom or anything else. Chinese input is the one feature a lot of people (one of them am I) are requesting.
