A while ago we exclusively reported that new version of the GPS and mapping tool Spot will bring new features (map image support / waypoint import and export) to the BlackBerry Pearl and I guess also to the 8800 series. Tomorrow - March 1st - shall be the day of the new release of that version. I am quite curious of how the new features will work.
So stay tuned and don’t run away. We keep you up to date!

Actually I don’t trust any analyst out there.
Anyway, that one statement is just interesting and I don’t want to keep it back. Mike Abramsky from RBC Capital Markets said
“While we continue to expect competitive launches,” Abramsky said, “particularly Apple’s iPhone, to pressure RIM’s valuation, RIM’s stronger than expected momentum may help mitigate this impact, reassuring investors its threat to RIM’s consumer push may be less than feared.”
That’s exactly what I am thinking. The Pearl and the iPhone will live together in a peaceful world competiting a bit but not too much.

Just found that nice article at gizmodo called “DIY: Change the Color of BlackBerry Pearl Trackball”
As a Pearl user - of course - I am interested in that!
All you need to do is take apart the Pearl trackball casing and color over the LEDs with a colored permanent marker of your liking.
Well, I am not sure to do this “modification” with my Pearl too. You know, it’s permanent and I will not be able to change it back.
Somehow it reminded me to the Black Pearl
The original article “Trackball Disassembly, LED Color Change & Reassembly” was written by BlackBerryForums member SanFrancisco and contains a lot of pictures as well as a detailed howto.

Just some time ago we mentioned that there is a new BlackBerry program that allows you to access the BlackBerry search engine at BerryQuery.com from within your BlackBerry. So you do not need a desktop computer anymore to find what you are looking for.
Well, some of us are maintaining a blog, a forum or some other BlackBerry realted site. For those of you who want to provide their readers a high quality search on the handpicked BerryQuery archive you can now embed their search engine into your site. It is as easy as writing some blog article. You just follow these three easy steps:
- Go to their site: http://www.berryquery.com/embed.html
- Copy their search engine code
- Paste it into your site
A demonstration:
For the programming experts out there you do also have the possibility to customize that search form to your needs. As it is standard html it will also not interfer with your site’s css layout. It will even take usage of your custom layout and flawlessly integrate itself into your own design.

Mike Elgan from Computerworld (Australia) wrote some interesting article on the BlackBerry Pearl. Well, we knew since months that the Pearl is the smartphone of the future!
However, he is right in saying:
The impact, or importance, of every groundbreaking device for shaping the direction of mobile electronics is clear only in hindsight. It’s hard to remember now, but when the radical, influential devices first shipped — the Sony Walkman, the Palm Pilot, the RIM BlackBerry, the Apple iPod — it wasn’t immediately clear that these products would dominate their markets and influence the direction of mobile electronics.
He also summarizes the Pearl in some facts that are a quite good and compact description of it:
- The Pearl is revolutionary
- The Pearl is radical
- The ‘Pearl’ is the killer feature
- The Pearl is a better phone
- The Pearl isn’t perfect (No-one can be perfect; that makes it realistic)
- The Pearl’s keyboard is better than you think
That are just a short excerpt of his article which I think are interesting. Please feel free to read the whole article: BlackBerry Pearl is the smartphone of the future - Here’s a column written entirely on the Pearl: welcome to the future

The BlackBerry 8800 hits the international market even faster than the BlackBerry Pearl did!
Fortunately the 3GSM World Congress took place in Barcelona / Spain and RIM - of course - was present there. So they also presented their new flagship called “BlackBerry 8800″ in Spain. In cooperation with the leading spanish network carrier Orange RIM announced for our spanish BlackBerry users.
Like me, they both mentioned the key features which
include an intuitive trackball navigation system, a full, highly tactile QWERTY keyboard and a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS)

I was just looking around for some stuff that is already compatible with the 8800. Not only Spot (GPS & Mapping) is supporting the BlackBerry 8800 by now. There are a bunch of ther programs like the BlackBerry Video and Web Video Generator (YouTube) that are also able to handle the 8800’s capabilities.

The quite famous tool BBWallpapers - Deluxe Edition which gives you lifetime access for a onetime payment to a huge wallpaper database.
A short excerpt of the functionality of this neat program: You can easily install it using the BlackBerry Destop Manager. When you start the program on your BlackBerry it automatically recognizes which BlackBerry you have and therefor knows which wallpapers might work for your device. All Wallpapers are handpicked and handcropped. So you will always get the best part of the wallpaper (you know, most images are too big for your BlackBerry’s screen) to your BlackBerry. By clicking “Get Wallpapers” from within the program you will get direct access to the wallpaper database and you can browse all wallpapers that fit to your BlackBerry.
It is great that there is such a solution for a merely small price of $8.99.
You can also get it at Handango for $9.99.

Some weeks ago we wrote about the free service BerryQuery.com. The BerryQuery.com search engine was developed in cooperation with Google. The search operates on a bunch of handpicked resources that are specialized to the BlackBerry scene. You can just enter a keyword in the search field and you will get a list of relevant search results. As mentioned before those search results are based on handpicked resources which deliver the best results you will ever see. There is no trash news between, no general mobile blogs or news papers who always appear quite high at search results but will not lead you to the content you are looking for.
Now we saw a new download link appearing at their site. This link offers you a free download of a BlackBerry Application to connect to the BerryQuery.com search engine. So you can now just install the program on your BlackBerry, click on the icon at your BlackBerry desktop and enter the keyword you are looking for at the textfield. It is so easy that you can’t believe it, right? Well, that’s enough of writing.
Here is the Download Link.
P.S.: This is not the free download we were talking about some days ago

The BlackBerry 8800 can now be purchased at the Amazon online store. There is currently only the Cingular version at that store but I am sure the T-Mobile version will be there soon too. The price is about $124.99 (You Save: $375.00 (75%) compared to the list price of $499.99) including a new service plan from Cingular. So for you guys out there that do want to walk to a Cingular store, this seems quite convenient.

Unfortunately there is onle the Cingular version online which requires a new service plan. I would like to see that I can purchase those devices without any plan. This would be the best for those of you (and us) who like to collect BlackBerry devices.
I will also keep promoting the GPS feature of the new BlackBerry 8800 which makes the 8800 one of only a few devices in the world that have such a GPS receiver already built-in. Moreover, I copied the product features from Amazon for your convenience:
