$150,000,000 for BlackBerry Applications

May 12th, 2008

BlackBerry 8800 GPSVenturebeat reported about the setup of a $150 million fund to boost BlackBerry application development. Unfortunately, the post has been taken down and we do not know why.

It is obvious that RIM has to respond on the iFund plans for iPhone applications. Following the example of many similar programs RIM’s appearance in the market as well as the functionality of the BlackBerry will increase dramatically. Just take a look to Facebook with its “Facebook Apps”. They became very attractive to their users and put the platform to another level. Moreover, Google is also doing something similar, but a more “community thing”: The Android Developer Challenge is a price competition where 50 round one winners get $25,000 each and even go on to the next level. The money is to give developers the freedom for their development of cutting edge mobile applications.

It will be interesting what kind of applications developers will bring if they are somehow more motivated. We see a lot of change in the software market for BlackBerry devices as there are coming more and more applications for BlackBerry right now. However, compared to platforms like Windows Mobile or Symbian those amount of applications is still not that much.

BlackBerry Unite! for Bell Mobility

May 9th, 2008

Bell MobilityBlackBerry Pearl Vodafone
The official idea of BlackBerry Unite!: “users can access a shared calendar, shared contacts, documents, and other desktop content in addition to email access and web browsing.”

The free download runs on a PC and then up to five BlackBerry smartphones can access email, web browsing, a shared calendar and more. This can all be done through a web-based interface. BlackBerry Unite! steps in where users do not have access to a centralized mail/messaging server. This software “extends the proven power and security of the BlackBerry platform in a simplified package that is optimized for small groups of people.” You’ll need a data plan, but there is no additional charge for clients with BlackBerry Email and Internet 25 and above rate plans with Bell.

Here is the site of Bell Mobility in case you want to check it out: http://www.bellmobility.ca/home/

Only 114,000 BlackBerry Subscribers in India

May 6th, 2008

BB Curve
RIM is very restrictive in matters of specific numbers of BlackBerry users. Even as a BlackBerry Alliance member you cannot get information about their customer base in a country. India’s government now stated that there are just 114,000 BlackBerry subscribers.

The government claimed that the country has just about 114,000 Blackberry subscribers in the country. This was stated by the Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication

With a mobile subscriber base of 260 millions there seems still to be a lot of potential. And when you start to look on India’s whole population (1+ bln.) you can imagine what’s up for us over ther! :)

Pat finds BlackBerry users rude

May 5th, 2008

PAT D’ENTREMONT Business Technology[…]

I always found BlackBerry users kind of, well, rude, to tell you the truth. You’re sitting at a meeting and there they are, clackety-clacking on their BlackBerrys and not paying any attention to what’s going on. Or they’re talking to you at a networking event and checking their e-mail at the same time. I even saw a guy the other day checking his e-mail while he was putting on a presentation. There was a lull during the Q & A and he slipped a few e-mails in. I also caught two people texting during midnight mass last Christmas.

[…]

Well, time is money man and we need to use every second of our live to get more productive and get more things done. However, it seems he got used and now knows the advantages of a BlackBerry:

When you integrate your BlackBerry with your office applications, it becomes a very powerful tool. I have it set up to synchronize with Microsoft Exchange (our corporate e-mail system), which is integrated with Outlook, which in turn synchronizes with our corporate Client Relationship Management system. That way I have with me at all times the names, addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of all my contacts.

That’s why it very important to synchronize your BlackBerry with your desktop or enterprise applications. We already have Mac OS X and Windows synchronization howtos available for free!
